Dear Radiation Questions,

Radiation is energy that travels in the form of waves or particles. When we hear the word ' radiation,' we generally think of nuclear power plants, nuclear weapons, or radiation treatments for cancer. Microwaves, radar, electrical power lines, cellular phones, and sunshine are also radiation sources.

Inhalation, ingestion, and direct exposure are the methods that radiation can affect the body. Exposure by the inhalation pathway occurs when people breathe radioactive materials into the lungs. Radioactive particles can lodge in the lungs and remain for a long time. A transfer of energy occurs, which can damage the surrounding tissues. This damage can eventually lead to cancer or other diseases.

Exposure by ingestion occurs when someone swallows radioactive materials. Large amounts of energy can be released, causing damage to tissues. All of the organs in the digestive system may become affected.

The third method for transmission of radiation is direct or external exposure from radioactive material. The concern about exposure to different kinds of radiation varies. Gamma rays, which are exceptionally harmful can be slowed by dense material (shielding), such as lead, and can be stopped if the material is thick enough.

Radiation is dangerous because of the way it damages the tissues, can cause cancer, and other serious symptoms and illness. The government has set standards and made regulations to attempt to reduce the amount of exposure that people have.
