Dear I'm Bi And Awkward With Girl I Like,

Questions regarding sexual preference are common on TeenHealthFX, so be sure to check out the answers Am I a bisexual? and 13 and Bisexual.  Having feelings for people of either gender, or being attracted to both males and females is normal. Today's society often forces people to label themselves so they can be categorized.  It is not necessary to commit yourself to the label of bisexual, as you discover your sexuality and decide what qualities you are attracted to.

Often, teens (and adults too) feel awkward around people whom they are attracted to.  This is because they may be trying to impress someone and trying to see if the other person is not only compatible with them, but if they have a similar attraction.  Perhaps talking to this girl and becoming friends with her will allow you learn more about her as a total person, not just as a teammate. Then you can decide if your feelings for her are strong enough to act upon.  Understand that sometimes revealing your true feelings may cause a friendship to end, and your privacy may be jeopardized if she discusses your advances with others.

If you feel comfortable talking to a parent, guidance counselor, or other trusted adult you should try to get help sorting out your feelings.  Check out FX's Links section under Sexuality and Sexual Health for some resources for teens that identify themselves as lesbian, gay or bisexual.  If you live in northern New Jersey and need help finding a therapist you can call the Access Center from Atlantic Behavioral Health at 888-247-1400. Outside of this area you can log onto the US Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration website for referrals in your area.
