Dear TeenHealthFX,

How do I tell my mom that I'm pregnant?

Dear Telling Mom I'm Pregnant,

This is a difficult question to answer, and it must be a very stressful topic for you. Being honest with your mother is very important. Even if you have not made up your mind regarding continuing the pregnancy, adoption, or termination you mother may be a strong support system and source of information for you. Whatever decision you make, will impact both you and your mom. Because we do not know your situation, it is difficult for us to gauge what her reaction will be, but it could range from disbelief to anger or sadness.

Telling your mother sooner rather than later will be helpful, since keeping a secret as important as this is very difficult. Try to make the situation as low-stress as possible, by talking to her in a calm controlled manner during a time when she is not rushed. It may benefit both of you to talk to a trained professional who specializes in teen health issues such as Planned Parenthood, your school nurse, or in northern NJ the Adolescent/Young Adult Center For Health at (973) 971.6475.

Regardless of when you tell your mother, make sure you see a doctor to discuss your options.
