Dear TeenHealthFX,

I have been with my girlfriend for three years. Since she has been away to college I have noticed that she has gained weight. How do I tell her?

Dear How Do I Tell My Girlfriend She Gained Weight,

Before you say anything to your girlfriend you might want to try and understand why she gained weight. Maybe the stress from being away from home combined with the pressures of college has led her to alter her diet and leave no time for exercise. If this is the case, you can empathize about the pressure she has been under and remind her that taking care of herself is the best way for her to combat the stress. If she seems really overwhelmed or depressed, you may want to hold off telling her until she is less vulnerable.

You should also realize that as people get older their metabolism changes and eventually they add some weight. The added weight does not necessarily mean you are getting "fat"; it is a sign that your body is changing.

You said that you have been with your girlfriend for three years. She obviously means a lot to you. When you bring up the issue of her weight remember all the things that make her special and someone who you like to spend your time with. Keep in mind that her weight is not all that you fell in love with. Once you have done that, you will be ready to let her know what is on your mind. Now simply be honest and tell her how you really feel, but do it gently. Be aware of her feelings.
