Published: March 27, 2002

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I have a brownish discharge and sometimes its kind of bloody looking like my period. Sometimes it's kind of chunky too. What could it be?

Signed: Brownish Chunky Discharge

Dear Brownish Chunky Discharge,

Having discharge between your periods is normal. This type of discharge is normally clear to milky white in color and may have a mild odor. It is made up of mucus secreted by glands in the vagina to help keep it clean and protected. Your discharge on the other hand may be of a different type. Depending upon when you have this brownish discharge it may be completely normal. If you are experiencing this discharge right before or right after your period it may be the outer portions of the uterine lining that is shed during your period. It can appear brownish in color and may produce some clotting or chunks.

However, if you are experiencing this discharge throughout the weeks between your periods it could be either spotting or an abnormal discharge. You should consult your physician or a gynecologist about this spotting so that he/she can determine if this is normal for you. If you don?t have a physician and live in the Northern New Jersey area, you can call 973.971.6475 for an appointment with the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health. If you live outside this area, you can contact your local Planned Parenthood.
