Female Body Concerns / Question
Published: April 30, 2002
Dear TeenHealthFX,
While I usually enjoy sex, for the past two weeks it has become uncomfortable. I find it hard to get wet enough to allow for easy penetration, and I can't stay wet during intercourse. Is there anything physically wrong with me? What can cause this sort of dryness?

Dear Hard To Get Wet,
There can be many explanations for vaginal dryness. One of the most common is that you are not aroused enough before sex. Check out Does Sex Hurt or Penis Didn't Fit for a comprehensive explanation of why this happens.
Taking certain medications such as some acne medications, decongestants and antihistamines can cause a reduction in bodily fluids. So can using marijuana before or after sex.
Stress can also alter the way you feel and respond to sexual situations. The stress may be either in the relationship or coming from an outside source.
These are just some of the possibilities of what could cause dryness. If you want a more specific answer that is relevant to you, then you probably want to check with your doctor. Your doctor can examine you and go over your history and be able to give you a good idea about what the problem is and what to do about it.
Many women suffer from a lack of lubrication so not to worry. You can try using a water-based lubricant, like KY Jelly during or before sex. This will increase lubrication. Make sure you do not use any oil-based products as they can break down condoms. Also, remember to always practice safer sex and use a condom.
If you would like to meet with a doctor from the Adolescent/Young Adult Center For Health in Morristown, New Jersey, you can call 973.971.6475 for an appointment. Outside of New Jersey, please call your local Planned Parenthood.
