Sexual Readiness? / Question
Published: April 4, 2000

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am currently enrolled in a college class, which I need to attain some information for.  I wanted to know if you believe that sexual activity has increased for whatever reasons, whether from the accessibility to birth control or the decrease of modesty.  Just wanted to know a more educated opinion.  Thank you very much.  Please email me back instead of posting since my question is not of a personal nature at...  Thank you once again.

Dear Sex On The Increase,

Sorry for not emailing you back directly as you requested.  TeenHealthFX cannot email its users back under any circumstances.  The nature of our web site is designed to be completely anonymous which means that we do not get email addresses and cannot email back anyone directly.

Good question. Unfortunately, the idea of sexual activity being on the increase among teenagers is a judgment call that TeenHealthFX cannot make.  However, we will say that a teenager’s accessibility to birth control will not increase sexual activity.  Also, we are not sure that modesty has much to do with it either.

TeenHealthFX thinks that this question is best referred to other research on sexuality among teens and there are some great groups that do this research.  Here are some sites that may interest you and we recommend that you contact them too for more information. The Kinsey Institute, SIECUS (Sexual Information and Education Council of the United States) and The Alan Guttmacher Institute
