Sexuality: Gay, Straight & Bisexual / Question
Published: August 6, 2002
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I am 15 (girl) and at a sleepover with two of my friends, when it was time to change into our PJ's, we all had to changes bras in front of each other so we each got a peek at each other's breasts. When they both saw mine, they said, "What's wrong w/ your chest?" And I never thought anything was wrong with my chest but they kept touching and feeling it and saying it didn't feel right. Then I knew what was going on-they wanted an excuse to feel my chest. So I made them take off their shirts and bras to compare and started feeling theirs. We all knew what we were doing. We wanted to touch each other's breasts because it aroused us. Does that mean we are lesbians? Because I felt more aroused with them than I ever did with a boy. Please answer ASAP!

Dear Touched Each Other's Chests-Lesbians,
It would probably be hasty to take one instance and use it to define your sexual orientation. The teenage years are full of change and discovery. Teens often begin to explore their bodies and the bodies of others as they develop. Also, changes inside may bring about new feelings or curiosities. While the pleasant feelings you experienced at your sleepover may suggest that you prefer to be intimate with other women, the feelings of arousal may simply be the result of excitement at trying something new. Though things may seem confusing now, your orientation will evolve as you gain experience interacting with men and women, and as you get to know yourself and your body. Sometimes feelings like the ones you describe need to be discussed with someone you trust like an adult, doctor, counselor or teacher. They may be able to help you sort out any issues or concerns associated with your sexuality.
