Oral & Anal Sex / Question
Published: February 18, 2004

Dear TeenHealthFX,

My boyfriend has Crohn's Disease. I do give him head almost once a week and I occasionally swallow his semen. Is there any chance I could get Crohn's by giving him oral, swallowing, or having sex with him?

Dear Can I Get Crohn's From Giving My BF Oral?,

Crohn's Disease is the inflammation of the intestines.   This can cause pain and make the intestines empty frequently resulting in diarrhea.  The most common symptoms are abdominal pain and diarrhea, but rectal bleeding, weight loss and fever may also occur.

A series of tests including a blood test and physical exam can diagnose Crohn's.  The cause of Crohn's is unknown and it is incurable, although treatable.  Depending on the severity of the disease and its location, drugs or surgery to remove part of the intestine can be used as treatment.  People who have Crohn's can lead normal and successful lives, while dealing with the disease.

You cannot get Crohn's disease from your boyfriend although its exact cause is not known.  You can, however, get an STD from him.  It is always important to practice safer sex and know your partner.  Many STD's can be transmitted without you knowing.  Check out these links for more information, Oral Sex & Digestion, Ready For Sex And Proper Protection.
