Females: Pain/Burning During Or After Penetration / Question
Published: September 26, 2002
Dear TeenHealthFX,
When I have sex and even when I'm just fooling around sometimes it hurts my vagina. Sometimes I can't even feel it but it is not really pleasurable. I don't know if its going too deep of what's wrong with me. I don't know why this is happening and I was hoping you could help me. I don't want an infection or anything.

Dear Confused - Pain With Sex,
TeenHealthFX strongly encourages you to be examined by a doctor - sex isn't supposed to hurt, it is supposed to be pleasurable. Your doctor will be able to evaluate the situation and let you know if any treatment is needed. In any case you'll feel much better once you know what is going on.
If you don't have your own doctor and you live in Northern New Jersey you can contact the Adolescent Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971.6475. Outside of this area you can go to a teen health clinic or local Planned Parenthood. They can see you without your parent's permission and on a low/no cost basis.
Last but not least, be sure to communicate your situation to your partner. Sex can be very fulfilling and pleasurable - both emotionally and physically. Just remember that an important part of having a positive experience is having a loving and supportive partner with whom you can communicate openly.
