Published: October 24, 2002

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I have a problem that I discovered, please help! I noticed that I have small anal warts that were not there before! I know that they are normally transmitted sexually but I have not had sexual intercourse in over a year. Is there a medication to treat this problem that I could get over the counter without having to visit a physician? Please help me I am desperate! Thank you so much!

Dear Can I Treat Anal Warts Myself?,

Only a doctor can accurately diagnose and treat your condition. If in fact you do have anal warts it is imperative that you get medical attention. Trying to cure your situation without professional help could lead to numerous complications. Human Papillomavirus (HPV) causes anal warts. The virus can be transferred from person to person mostly by sexual contact. If you are sexually active you run the risk of infecting your partner. Until you know what is going on you should refrain from any sexual activity.

The other concern about genital HPV infection is that it can cause cancer of the cervix in women. Cancer of the penis or anus is also thought to be due to HPV infection. Fortunately, most people with HPV infection will never develop these kinds of cancer. Since doctors can't predict who will and won't, everyone should be examined and treated. For more information concerning anal warts see Can It Be HPV.

If you need a doctor and live in northern New Jersey you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center For Health at 973.971.6475 for an appointment. If you do not live in this area you can contact your local teen health clinic or Planned Parenthood for help.
