Sexuality & Sexual Health: Miscellaneous / Question
Published: October 29, 2002
Dear TeenHealthFX,
Whenever I get aroused, I have to go pee. This isn't normal is it? Is there anything I can do so I don't have to go pee? Please answer.

Dear Arousal Problems,
Since you do not specify if you are male or female, it is a bit difficult for TeenHealthFX to answer your question.
If you are male, we can tell you that the normal physiology of erections and ejaculations involves closure of the bladder neck so that semen does not go backwards into the bladder. This closure of the bladder neck also makes it very difficult to urinate with an erection even if you have a full bladder.
Some females have reported a feeling of pressure building in their pelvic area joined by a release of fluid when they climax, or orgasm. Although this is most often not urine, it can feel like it.
The important thing to keep in mind is that arousal is an entirely personal thing and can mean different things to different people, with no one sensation being the "correct one".
Having that said, regardless of whether you are male or female, it probably would be a good idea to empty your bladder before sexual activity, and if what you are feeling is making you uncomfortable in any way, it would be a good idea to talk to a doctor or other health professional. If you live in northern New Jersey you can contact the Adolescent/Young Adult Center For Health at 973.971.6475 for an appointment.
