Sex Definitions / Question
Published: May 27, 2004
Dear TeenHealthFX,
A few days ago, my friend told me something about fisting. then, just yesterday, my boyfriend asked me if he could fist me! It's not like I won't let him physically touch me, but I don't know what fisting is. What is it?

Dear Fisting Defined,
Fisting is when a person inserts their fist into the vagina or rectum (butt) of their sexual partner. It is a sexual activity that can be risky for STIs and can also be painful. Good communication is a must when practicing fisting. It is important for the person on the receiving end of fisting to be able to say whether the feeling is pleasurable or if there is a need to slow down or stop. In addition, the partners should be using plenty of lubrication and also wearing latex gloves. FX does recommend that if you are considering participating in fisting that you and your partner discuss it and set some ground rules, especially about stopping if there is pain.
Some people may approve of this activity and others may never consider doing it. The act of fisting, like any sexual activity is a personal decision. If you do not feel comfortable doing it, then you shouldn't. You are in charge of your body and you can make the decision if this is right for you.
No conversation or question would be complete without FX saying to remember to practice safer sex ( in this circumstance that would mean using rubber gloves during fisting). And as always, if you are consider doing this or any sexual activity, it is a good idea to see a doctor first just to make sure there are no health concerns. Go to a teen health clinic, like Planned Parenthood or in northern NJ, call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971.6475.
