Sexually Transmitted Diseases / Question
Published: September 9, 2003
Dear TeenHealthFX,
Last time me and my boyfriend performed anal sex he didn't use a condom like we normally do. Now he says he thinks he has an infection. At first he said he showed signs of Chlamydia but he's the first person I have been sexually involved with. I trust him and I know he hasn't been going out on me and having sex with multiple partners so it doesn't make sense. Personally I feel fine but then again I feel really bad now because it was my body that did this to him. What exactly are the dangers involved with anal sex on the guy's part? Is this problem for him directly related to us performing anal sex without a condom... or is it just a coincidence?

Dear Anal Sex Without A Condom-BF Now Has Chlamydia,
It doesn't sound like your boyfriend knows for sure if he has an STD. It's very important that he make an appointment right away, either with his doctor or local adolescent health center or Planned Parenthood. If he lives in northern New Jersey, he can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971.6475.
It's important for you to keep in mind that he can't be sure what he has until he is diagnosed. Chlamydia is transmissible through anal sex, but if you have never been sexually active with anyone besides him, then it's extremely unlikely that you have it. There is no way for us to diagnose your boyfriend over the Internet, nor can we tell you what is causing the symptoms he is experiencing. However, FX wants to stress that you are not at fault. When someone decides to have unprotected sex with another person, they are responsible for the risk that decision carries.
Even though you're with your first sexual partner, your boyfriend runs the risk of acquiring a urinary infection or other bacterial diseases when he has unprotected anal sex with you. It's very important for you to practice safer sex each and every time you have vaginal or anal intercourse.
