Pregnancy: Could I Be Pregnant? / Question
Published: December 24, 2002

Dear TeenHealthFX,

Okay, so me and my 10 month boyfriend had sex for the first time in October. It was really good, but i very precautious because i am only 14 years old and in 8th grade. I used a condom, and everything seemed to be fine. Then we did it again in early November. In the middle of the sex the condom slipped off and we had to put a new one on. I didnt really think about it at the time, but i guess i dont exactly know for how long the condom was off. So after November, i started feeling naucious, and i had to urinate about every 25- 30 minutes. I was feeling really depressed one moment and so happy and bubbly the next. I had my period in the end of October, and then i got it, 5 days after i had sex for the 2nd time. I mean i dont think my boyfriend ejaculated into me, but it could be possible. I dont think im pregnant but should i get one of those at home pregnancy tests? Please Help!!

Dear Confused In Morristown,

TeenHealthFX is glad that you wrote.  We're concerned about you physically and emotionally. Please realize that fourteen is too young to be having sex for several reasons, including your body and your emotions not being fully developed yet. TeenHealthFX recommends that you think about, and perhaps discuss with a trusted adult, whether or not you are truly ready to handle the various responsibilities that come with being sexually intimate with someone. It's important to consider how ready you are to deal with the possible consequences of being sexually active, such as getting pregnant or transmitting an STD, as well as dealing with the intense emotions that very often accompany being sexually intimate with someone.

Having already made the choice to have sex for the first time, TeenHealthFX is glad to hear that you used a condom in order to practice safer sex.  When used properly condoms can be an effective method of preventing pregnancy and protecting you against STDs.  However, TeenHealthFX is a bit confused by your timeline of events described in your question.

We recommend that you go to your doctor and get a pregnancy test as soon as possible because the condom did slip off during intercourse.  You'll feel better knowing for sure.  You can also talk to your doctor about effective methods of birth control and sexual readiness.

If you don't have a doctor or if you're not comfortable talking to your own doctor and you live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health for an appointment at 973.971.6475. Outside of this area, you can contact your local Planned Parenthood or teen health center. These services all provide confidential care at low or no cost.

Good luck.
