Pregnancy: Could I Be Pregnant? / Question
Published: June 3, 2003

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I'm a 17-year-old bisexual guy. I am really concerned. I had oral sex with my boyfriend, that is he came in my mouth. A couple of hours later I had oral sex with my girlfriend, that is I went down on her and then had safe sex with a condom. She is 2 weeks late for her period and swears that she has not had sex with anyone else. Could it be at all possible that any of my boyfriend's semen stayed alive in my mouth and made her pregnant? Or do you think she is lying to me about having sex with someone else? Thanks in advance from a very worried bi guy.

Dear Male Had Oral Sex With Boyfriend & Then Girlfriend, Could She Get Pregnant?,

We're sorry to hear you are so concerned. We want to reassure you that it is virtually impossible for you to have impregnated your girlfriend with someone else's sperm. It is possible that she's late for other reasons - it's normal for a young woman to have irregular menstrual cycles. There is no way for us to guess about whether she is having sex with someone else.

If your girlfriend is concerned, the only way she can know for sure if she's pregnant is to take a pregnancy test. She can buy a home test, or call a local Adolescent Health Center or Planned Parenthood. If you live in northern New Jersey, please call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971.6475. These places have professionals who, in addition to providing testing, can discuss options in the event that she is pregnant.

Practicing safer sex is always important, but as you have probably begun to think about, it's even more important when you have more than one partner. If you were to contract a sexually transmitted disease, for example, you could pass it along to another partner before you were even aware you had it yourself. There are a lot of STDs that can be transmitted between the mouth and the genitals. You can prevent this type of transmission by using a flavored condom or dental dam during oral sex. If you don't choose to use this type of protection, you may want to have a very honest conversation with both your partners about safety. It sounds like you are having trouble trusting at least one of them completely.
