Male Body Concerns / Question
Published: June 16, 2004
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I am a boy. I find that I have to go to toilet to urinate (I mean I am feeling the sensation of full urinary bladder) when I am sexually stimulated. Is it normal?
Signed: Full Bladder When Sexually Stimulated
Dear Full Bladder When Sexually Stimulated,
When a man gets sexually stimulated, the prostate gland produces fluid in preparation for ejaculation. If this arousal is not followed by climax, or there is a lengthy amount of time that passes before ejaculation, the prostate can become tender and feel a bit like the pain of not urinating when the bladder is very full. Since the prostate gland is a doughnut shaped structure that surrounds the urethra (the tube that allows urine and semen to exit the body), this can sometimes make you feel as though your bladder is full.
The normal physiology of erections and ejaculation involves the closure of the bladder neck so that semen does not travel backwards into the bladder. This closure of the bladder neck is why it is sometimes difficult to urinate for several minutes after ejaculation. This, too, can make you feel as though your bladder is very full when you are aroused.
This being said, it is probably a good idea for you to tell your doctor about what you have been experiencing, just to make sure everything is ok. Feeling like you need to urinate when you do not is oftentimes a sign of a bladder infection, which can be easily diagnosed and treated by your doctor. In addition, problems with urination can also be a sign of a sexually transmitted disease (STD), which should also be looked into by a doctor.
Any discussion on sex would not be complete without a talk about safer sex. If you are going to have sex, please practice safer sex by using condoms to prevent STDs and pregnancy. Also, if you are sexually active, a doctor should see you and your partner. If you live outside of Northern New Jersey, please call your local Planned Parenthood. If you live in Northern New Jersey, please call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 889.6350. Both Planned Parenthood and Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health can see teens confidentially and without your parent's permission for sexual health reasons.
