Females: Your Period / Question
Published: February 23, 2004
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I am a 15 year old female and I do not have my period yet. I am 5'1 and 86 pounds; my mother is small like me and started at 14. Why is it taking so long for me to develop?

Dear Impatient For Period,
A female's period can begin as early as age 8 and as late as 16 years old. In general your period should begin two to three years after breast development and one to two years after the appearance of pubic hair.
You can only use your mother's age of menstruation as a guide to when you will get your period. Each female is different and you are still within the normal range. However, your weight, which is below average for your height, may be playing a role in the delayed onset of your period. So, if you reach 16 and still haven't gotten your period you should see your doctor. If you have other questions about the way your body is going through puberty and developing you should see your doctor to rule out any other conditions.
It is important to realize that everyone's body is different and within time you will develop. Puberty tends to be a tricky road for all, but one that you can navigate with a little patience.
