Dear TeenHealthFX,
I think I'm pregnant! I'm only 17 and don't know what to do, I'm not sure because if I am pregnant I have drank and smoke since then would the baby be dead from this?

TeenHealthFX is concerned about you -- this situation has to be very stressful.
If you suspect that you are pregnant then what you need to do is go to see a doctor as soon as possible and take a pregnancy test. Finding out early is important so that you can decide what to do. Although home pregnancy tests can be accurate, the only way to know for sure is to take one administered by a medical professional. A simple blood or urine test can tell you if you are pregnant soon after you have missed your period. You can go to your local Planned Parenthood or teen health center where a doctor can see you at a low or no cost basis. If you live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971.6475 for an appointment.
These tests are confidential and the law in New Jersey does not require your parents be notified of the results.
If you are pregnant, then certainly drinking and smoking would be harmful to the baby you are carrying. TeenHealthFX can not tell you whether or not you have drank and smoked to the point that the levels of alcohol and tobacco in your blood would be toxic to the baby and result in its' death. Again, only a doctor can tell you for sure what is going on.
Lastly TeenHealthFX wants you to remember to use the proper birth control and practicing safe sex. As long as you are sexually active, it is important that you take responsibility for your health and take the proper precautions to protect yourself against STDs as well as unwanted pregnancy. When you go to see your doctor for your pregnancy test he or she can explain your options or go over methods to further reduce your chances of becoming pregnant or getting an STD as well.
