Females: Your Period / Question
Published: January 15, 2003

Dear TeenHealthFX,

Is it unhealthy to only have 10 days between your period? Is it a sign of pregnancy or anything else?

Dear Only Ten Days Between Periods,

A normal menstrual cycle or period is 2-8 days in length and usually comes every 21 to 35 days. TeenHealthFX is concerned for you. How long has this pattern been going on? Is there any activity or stress that could be adversely effecting your period? If you have just begun menstruating it is normal for you periods to be irregular at first. However, ten days between each period is not much of a cycle and warrants a visit to your doctor. He or she can perform specific tests to check hormone levels and refer you to a gynecologist (a doctor who specializes in problems of the female reproductive system).

Although this is not a sign of pregnancy it may be a sign of a medical condition that only a physician can detect. It is very important that you see your doctor and get checked out immediately. If you live in the northern New Jersey area you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973.971.6475 to make an appointment.
