Sexuality & Sexual Health: Miscellaneous / Question
Published: January 16, 2003
Dear TeenHealthFX,
When my ex-girlfriend would cuddle with me or when we were about to sexually do something I would get a sick feeling in my stomach! I threw up numerous times and I was wondering what it is, I'm not nervous. Although I think it is because I have stress, because when I climax it goes away.

Dear Sick Feelings When Intimate With Girlfriend,
TeenHealthFX recognizes that being intimate with someone can create many feelings - including those of nervousness and anxiety. It sounds like that is what was happening to you, and is completely normal. Stress affects our bodies in numerous ways including that "sick feeling" you mentioned and even vomiting. The "sick feeling" goes away with your climax, because it is a type of release.
You may want to explore what was happening in your relationship with you ex-girlfriend - was it a calm relationship where you could talk and trust each other, were there other stresses in your lives, etc? By looking at what was going on in the relationship as well as the rest of your life, you may uncover other sources of stress.
Often, we experience different types of stress and do not even realize it. Sexual intimacy brings a lot of emotions, fears and anxiety for all of us. Therefore, TeenHealthFX recommends talking with a trusted adult about your feelings regarding sex and intimacy. Discussing your feelings may help to relieve some of your nervousness, ask questions, and even allow you to better enjoy your sexual experiences.
You can also discuss this with your doctor if you are uncomfortable talking to your parents. If you do not have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can contact the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973.971.6475 to make an appointment. Outside of this area, you can contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. All of these services can see you on a low or no cost basis without your parent's consent.
And always, TeenHealthFX want to remind you to practice safer sex.
