Females: Your Period / Question
Published: November 26, 2003

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I'm 15 years old and for the past two days I've been having clot-like material passing through my vagina, I don't know what it's from or what it is. Can you answer my question for me and if you have a question to ask me to find a solution to why is that I'm having this problem I'd be glad to answer them. I'd like to remain anonymous. Thank you.

Dear Clot-Like Material For Two Days,

As you know your identity will remain anonymous on TeenHealthFX.

Although you do not mention it, TeenHealthFX assumes that you are currently menstruating and this material is part of a heavy flow. Depending on your activity range and diet, your period can vary from light to heavy. If you have just started menstruating, it is normal for your cycle to be irregular.

Changes in your cycle and abnormal bleeding can result for many reasons. An increase in emotional stress, excessive exercise and hormonal imbalances can greatly affect your period. Although clots may be scary, they are normal when passed during your period. While sleeping the blood tends to clot and you will release them in the morning. When you experience clotting while not menstruating or during a prolonged period of bleeding you should see your doctor. He or she can perform specific tests and a pelvic exam and determine the cause of your bleeding.

Talk to your doctor about your concerns about your period - your doctor can evaluate you and make recommendations if any are needed. If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, contact the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973.971.6475 for an appointment. If you live outside of this area, contact your local teen health clinic or Planned Parenthood.
