Female Body Concerns / Question

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I have a hormonal condition, POD. I'm not sure what it stands for, but I know it means I make more male hormones than I'm supposed to. What Can I do to stop that?

Dear Girl With Guy Hormones,

It sounds like you may have been diagnosed with polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD).

Irregular menstrual bleeding or absence of periods characterizes this disorder. When uterine bleeding does occur it is unpredictable as to time of onset, duration, and amount. On occasion the bleeding can be severe. Other symptoms include obesity, excess body hair, acne, and difficulty getting pregnant.

The diagnosis of PCOD is primarily made by the history of irregular periods and blood work that reveals an excess of male sex hormones. These hormones are produced by the ovary in all women but in women with PCOD the amount is excessive. Treatment usually involves weight reduction and the use of oral contraceptives to reverse some of the hormonal imbalances. Once the excess male hormone is controlled, shaving or electrolysis can take care of previously existing hair. If pregnancy is desired, prescription drugs can be used to induce ovulation (the release of an egg).

It is a good idea for you to speak with your doctor to confirm your diagnosis and discuss treatment. For more information and support, you can log onto the Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Association.
