Sexually Transmitted Diseases / Question
Published: February 23, 2004

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I have had 2 doctors just visually examine me and told me that I definitely have genital herpes. I have also had some swelling in my groin area and now in my neck under the jaw that is extremely painful. What could be causing the neck pain like that? Also, they prescribed me Valtrex and I'm not responding to the medicine. They said some strains do not respond to meds. What can I do now?

Dear Herpes - With Sweeling in Neck & Groin = Valtrex,

So far you've done the right thing by going to the doctor. TeenHealthFX cannot provide a diagnosis, and the best advice is to continue being compliant with medication and physician visits. Since you are experiencing new symptoms (or the pain has increased), like the neck pain, make another appointment, or if you live in northern NJ, call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971-6475 to see another physician. Check out our response to Herpes-HSVI Hypochondriac for some general info about the virus.

Herpes can be diagnosed through a physical examination as well as through laboratory procedures. There are strains that are resistant to Valtrex, and in those cases alternative treatments may be suggested by your doctor.

Again, return to the doctor ASAP since the pain is bad and with proper treatment some of your symptoms may be alleviated. Good Luck.

Signed: TeenHealthFX
