Published: May 19, 2004

Dear TeenHealthFX,

If you wear a condom during anal sex and the guy ejaculates, then how can it get into the anal area? And same for regular sex ? if the condom is on, how can the cum escape into the sexual are (vagina or anal area)? How do you use a condom?

Dear How Can Cum Escape Condom?,

If you are using a condom properly, no "cum" (ejaculatory fluid) should get out of the condom and enter the other person's body, whether you are having anal or vaginal sex. If they are not used properly, it is possible that some cum can escape the condom. However, it is not difficult to use them properly. Some things to remember:

  • Keep condoms handy. Open it and have it close by. Always look at the expiration date on the wrapper before you use a condom. If the date has passed, throw it away.
  • Make sure the condom is the right size. If you cannot roll it down easily, it is too small and may tear. If it fits loosely, it is too big and may fall off.
  • When the penis gets hard, put the condom on by rolling it down the penis while squeezing the tip of the condom (leave about a 1/2 inch at the tip to catch the semen).
  • Make sure to use plenty of water-based lubricant when using a condom. The less friction, the less chance there is that the condom will break or fall off.
  • When you are finished having sex, be sure to hold the base of the condom as you pull out, and move away from your partner before you remove it. Tie it in a knot and throw it out right away. Do this before the penis gets soft.

We are not sure why you are asking this question, but if you have had a condom mishap, you or your partner may want to see a doctor. If you do not have a doctor and you live in Northern New Jersey, please call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971.6475. If you live elsewhere, get in touch with your local adolescent health center or clinic, or Planned Parenthood.
