Dear TeenHealthFX,
Is there any discharge associated with a male yeast infection?

Dear Male Yeast Infections,
Although most male yeast infections do not typically cause a discharge (like they do in females), sometimes a discharge does occur. Symptoms that usually do occur for men with a yeast infection are dry scaly skin and itchiness. Also, they are most often sexually transmitted.
When a discharge from the penis does occur, FX would be concerned that it is a sign of an STD like chlaymydia, gonorrhea, or trichomonas which can all cause discharge from the penis. Infections other than STDs may also result in discharge in the penile area. This includes infections around the head of the penis which are more common in uncircumcised males.
Regardless of infection or not, any discharge from the penis should be checked out by a doctor. A discharge requires treatment. If you do not have a doctor in your area, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center For Health in Morristown, New Jersey at 973.971.6475 for an appointment or contact your local Planned Parenthood.
Your best protection against infections in or near the penis is to keep the area clean. If you are uncircumcised, it is best to gently pull back the foreskin of the penis to expose the head of the penis and wash the area gently with soap and water. It is important to not use harsh cleansers that can irritate the area.
The best way to avoid STDs is to use protection when having sexual intercourse, including oral sex. Condoms are your best protection and should be used every time you have sexual intercourse. Remember that a new condom should be used every time you have intercourse and that condoms should not be reused. It is also important to know your partner and to talk to her or him about your concerns about sex and to ask if they have ever been tested for sexually transmitted diseases.
