Breasts & Nipples: Health Questions & Concerns / Question
Published: February 24, 2000

Dear TeenHealthFX,

My 13 1/2 year old daughter found a lump on her breast which I felt and it is approximately the size of a quarter, possibly a bit larger. I am quite concerned, however she has her period and I am wondering if it could be related to the changes in her growing breasts and the fact that she has her period at the moment. She has had her period for over a year now. Should I bring her to the doctor immediately or see if any changes occur within the next week or so? I appreciate any advise you could give me. Thank you.

Dear My Daughter Has A Lump In Her Breast,

Your daughter's lump in her breast seems like it must be causing much anxiety not only with you, but with her too. TeenHealthFX recommends that you go to a doctor to get her checked out. It is very rare that this could be a harmful condition, but only a doctor can tell and make a diagnosis. In order to relieve both of your minds, make an appointment with a doctor or gynecologist. An adolescent medicine physician is a good resource for this concern. If you live in Northern New Jersey, please call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971.5199 or Girl Street - A Young Women's Health Initiative at (908) 522.2555. This will give you the reassurance you need and will let your daughter know that everything is okay too.

Since she has had her period for over a year, it is probably not due to her changing breasts and puberty. Many women have completely benign (non-cancerous) lumps in their breast often referred to as fibroadenomas, but again only a doctor knows the difference and can diagnose it.

Also, it is terrific that your daughter noticed this change in her breast and maybe even by doing a Breast Self Exam. You should give her positive feedback and encouragement about this. It is so important that teenagers become aware of their bodies and notice any changes. This will help her as she goes into adulthood and has to see medical professionals on her own.
