Pregnancy: Could I Be Pregnant? / Question
Published: January 7, 2004
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I am 16-year-old female. My boyfriend and I were fooling around and we started to have anal sex. He slipped out and accidentally pushed into my vagina. He wasn't protected, but I was on my period and I had a tampon in. He was only in there a few seconds. What are the chances of me getting pregnant?

Dear Accidental Sex - Could I Be Pregnant?,
A woman is most likely to get pregnant in the middle of her cycle - about halfway between the start of one period and the start of the next period - when an egg is traveling down her fallopian tube and is able to be fertilized. It's much less likely that she will get pregnant during her period. However, no one's cycle works perfectly and consistently every time, and the younger you are, the less regular your cycles are. It is possible to get pregnant any time during your cycle.
Your boyfriend was only near your vagina which had a tampon in for a short time, and it doesn't sound like he ejaculated at that time. This also makes it unlikely that you are pregnant. However, most men release a little bit of pre-ejaculate fluid from the penis before they come, and this fluid can contain sperm. Therefore, it's possible to get pregnant even if a man doesn't ejaculate while he is inside or near your vagina.
The only way you can know for sure if you are pregnant is to take a pregnancy test. You can buy a home test, or call a local Adolescent Health Center or Planned Parenthood. If you live in Northern New Jersey, please call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971.6475. These places have professionals who can discuss your options with you in the event that you are pregnant.
We also want you to know that some sexually transmitted diseases can be passed along through anal sex. You can prevent STD transmission by using a condom. If you don't want to do this, we hope you and your boyfriend will discuss the possibility that you may put one another at risk for STDs if you have any other partners; in addition, you both may want to get tested for STDs.
