Female Body Concerns / Question

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I have a linea nigra, but I've never been pregnant and it is not hair. I have done research and cannot find what could be the cause of this

Signed: Linea Nigra - Causes?

Dear Linea Nigra - Causes?,

Linea nigra is a dark line from the bellybutton down to the top of a woman's pubic hair that is seen in some pregnant women in their latter part of pregnancy. Usually, you have an unnoticeable line the same color as your skin in the same place. During pregnancy, hormones tend to darken this line.

We can see why you've been having trouble answering this question for yourself - it's difficult to find information about linea nigra in women who have never been pregnant. Some research suggests there may be a link between linea nigra and insulin. You may want to consult a doctor to find out more information. If you live in northern New Jersey you could call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center For Health at 973.971.6475 for an appointment.
