Penis Size / Question
Published: November 1, 2000

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I want to know if the tube (that people say enlarges the penis) works or is surgery an option?  Thanks for your help.

Dear Penis Enlarger,

There are ways both surgically (augmentation phalloplasty or penis enlargement surgery) and non-surgically (using a pump and tube) to help to enlarge the penis.  However, neither is without risks.

Medically, both non-surgical and surgical methods are not seen as highly regarded procedures within the medical community.  The American Urological Association, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and the Society for the Study for Impotence all agree that these techniques have not been proven safe or good.  The risks with surgery are infection, scarring, cosmetic deformity, sexual dysfunction and, sometimes - shrinkage.

In addition to the medical evidence lacking the support of these procedures, many men who have tried these products are generally unhappy with their results.

TeenHealthFX highly recommends against doing any of these procedures.  We are concerned however with why you want this information.  Also, we would like to ask you if you are concerned with your own penis size.  If you are concerned with your penis size, first let TeenHealthFX tell you that this is a common concern among teen-aged males.

During puberty, your body is completely changing not only physically, but also emotionally.  Unfortunately, many teens (including females) are not happy with certain parts of their body.  In time, most learn to adjust and become satisfied with what they have.  Many males think that their penis is too small or that it just not as large as they wish it to be.

Remember that the size of a man's penis is by no means the most important aspect of his masculinity or sexual functioning.

Having said all of this, TeenHealthFX suggests that if your question comes from concerns about your own genitals not being normal or adequate that you speak with you own doctor about this very personal issue.  If you are not comfortable with that and live in Northern NJ, call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973.889.6350 for an appointment to meet with a doctor.
