Masturbation / Question
Published: March 22, 2001

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I think there is something wrong with me. I am very horny and love to masturbate either with a showerhead or any kind of thing that will feel good. Is this unusual and should I stop?

Dear Love To Masturbate,

It is not unusual for females or males to want to masturbate. It is considered a normal, healthy expression of one's sexuality. It is a good way to find out what feels good to you sexually - so again, you are not unusual.

Frequently store bought devices such as vibrators or household items such as a showerhead are used to enhance the masturbation experience. There is nothing wrong with using devices, however, it is important that these items be sanitary and not cause damage to sexual genitalia.

Should you stop masturbating? You don't say exactly how often you masturbate. Masturbating excessively can sometimes be considered a symptom of a compulsive behavior, however, there are no criteria to determine how many times a day is excessive. A good general guideline to follow is, if masturbating doesn't get in the way of normal activities and your are not sore afterwards, then you're probably just fine.

If after reading this you think masturbation is a problem for you, then to talk with your doctor. TeenHealthFX knows this may be awkward for you, but realize that dealing with sexual concerns is common for doctors. If after talking to your doctor you both feel there is a problem, then he/she may be able to refer you to a therapist who has experience dealing in this area. If you live in Northern New Jersey you can also call Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973.889.6350 for an appointment.
