Females: Your Period / Question
Published: October 8, 2003

Dear TeenHealthFX,

Hi, I am meeting my boyfriend very soon and we are planning to have sex for the first time together. But. today my period came early. I don't know what to do. I know you can have sex during your period, but I wouldn't feel comfortable. Is there any way of decreasing my bleeding time???

Dear Decrease Period Bleeding Time?,

Unfortunately, there is no way to decrease the time during which you are bleeding, unless you are having abnormally long periods, in which case you should visit a doctor. You're right, you can have sex during your period, but since you do not feel comfortable with this, you will need to discuss this with your partner.  Many people do not feel comfortable having sex during their period so you are not alone.  Getting your period when you are planning to have sex can be a drag, but it's part of life. As you become more comfortable with sex, you may discover that doing it during your period is less of a big deal.

We'd also like to make sure you that you are having safer sex. It's important to make sure you protect yourself no matter where you are in your cycle.
