Breasts & Nipples: Health Questions & Concerns / Question
Published: June 12, 2001
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I am 14 and have had my period for a year but my breasts are really odd looking and my nipples are always puffy and look swollen. They don't hurt and I am self conscious about them. Will they ever look normal and will my nipples not look so puffy?
Signed: Puffy Nipples
Dear Puffy Nipples,
As your breasts begin to develop it is common for them to grow unevenly or have one bigger than the other. As they develop they will most likely even out before they reach their final shape and size.
As long as you are not experiencing any significant pain or swelling, there is nothing for you to worry about. Try to be patient as your body matures. Breasts come in all shapes and sizes all of which are considered "normal." You could talk to your mother about the situation. Since she shares some of the same genetic material as you, chances are your experience will be similar to hers.
In rare cases, girls breasts can grow in an unusual way. If you are concerned, you may want to get checked out by your doctor or an adolescent medicine physician. If you would like to consult with a doctor and live in northern New Jersey you can call Girl Street - A Young Women's Health Program at (908) 522.2555.
