Females: Your Period / Question
Published: October 7, 2003

Dear TeenHealthFX,

Next month I am going on a vacation with my parents. We are going to the seaside and I will probabbly get my period while we are there. Since I want to swim I will use tampons. That will be my first time. I have some questions about wearing a tampon and swimming: 1) How long can I stay in the water? 2) Will the tampon get soaked with water? 3) Can the tampon fall out while I am swimming?

Dear Tampons At The Seaside,

FX is glad you're giving a lot of thought to using tampons while swimming.  The good news is, if you're using one, you can swim without worry during your period.  You can stay in the water as long as you want (as long as you remember to change your tampon at least every 4 to 8 hours).  When the tampon feels full, it is usually time to change it. And if the tampon has been inserted properly and changed regularly enough, it should not fall out while you are swimming.

Using tampons while swimming may take a little getting used to, but you'll get the hang of it in no time.
