Visiting The Doctor / Question
Published: September 26, 2001

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I have recently started experiencing an aching sensation in my left testicle from time to time. I regularly check myself for lumps etc., but I have not found anything. I do not want to a see a doctor about this as I am embarrassed that I may get an erection if I am checked.

Dear Worried About Erection During Exam,

If you are experiencing pain and it is bothering you, than seeing a doctor makes a lot of sense. TeenHealthFX understands that getting an erection during the exam may be awkward for you, but it is important to understand that this can be a common reaction for many males and your doctor is use to it. In fact many physicians recognize their patients are self-conscious about this situation and will deal with it in a professional manner that helps put the patient at ease.

TeenHealthFX is delighted to hear that you are performing testicular self-exams; it is an important part of maintaining good health. For our readers who are not familiar with testicular exams, a detailed explanation is available in the question, One Testicle's Bigger.
