Penis Size / Question
Published: October 17, 2001

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I have a penis about 6.5 inches in length and 5.5 inches in maximum circumference and have yet to have sex with anyone. The problem is I have this longer than average size and I am afraid that if I hit the vagina's deepest wall, it will hurt her a lot. Will it? Also, without maximum insertion (not the whole penis enters the vagina and be covered wholly with warm flesh), it is no fun at all. Isn't it cool to have everything inside? What should I do to maximize my fun? If for the first time, she bleeds, must we stop sex?

Signed: Deep Penetration

Dear Deep Penetration,

Much of what you asked depends on your partner. Some women can accommodate a very large penis while others may feel some discomfort. The important thing is to go slow and make sure your partner is sufficiently aroused and lubricated before you attempt penetration. If "maximum insertion" bothers your partner then you need to try something else.

You can maximize your fun by talking to your partner and find out what both of you enjoy and what you both are comfortable doing. The human body has many pleasure zones, which is something you will discover if you do not limit yourself to notions like "maximum insertion."

If your partner bleeds the first time you have sex you must do what ever she asks. If she says stop then you must stop. If she says wait awhile then wait awhile. If your girlfriend is not in pain or upset, then she may ask you to continue, which you can. The most important thing to remember is to have respect for each other.

If you are planning on becoming sexually active then you should make an appointment at a teen health center or Planned Parenthood to learn about safer sex and birth control options and have any of your questions answered. If you are in northern New Jersey you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center For Health at 973.889.6350 for an appointment.
