Masturbation / Question
Published: December 16, 2001
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I am a 19-year-old male. I have read that over time masturbation can cause the self-destruction of your brain's acetylcholine, dopamine and serotonin nervous systems. I don't have morning erections anymore and I am afraid that over-masturbation destroyed my potency (I used to get erections all the time-not any more) Can This be true?

Dear Did Masturbation Destroy Potency,
Acetylcholine, Dopamine and Serotonin are all neurotransmitters that affect the nervous system. There is no scientific evidence that masturbation itself can alter neurotransmitters and cause erectile dysfunction. There are some medications that can alter neurotransmitter function, which can lead to erectile problems.
You described a loss of spontaneous erections, but did not mention that you were having problems maintaining an erection during sexual activity. If you are having trouble maintaining an erection you may want to consult with a doctor. There are some medical conditions that can cause impotence and it has nothing to do with masturbation.
If you live in northern New Jersey and would like to meet with a doctor, you call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center For Health at 973.889.6350 for an appointment.
