Body Weight - What's Normal? / Question
Published: August 15, 2001

Dear TeenHealthFX,

Hi I'm 12 years old, and I'm 4'10" and weigh 75 pounds. Why do you think I'm this small and so short?

Dear Small And Short,

The size that you are now and the size you eventually will be, is all determined by genetics. To get a look at your genetic background look at your parents' heights and weight. You probably will fall somewhere in between their height and weight.

You didn't mention whether you are a male or female.  It is possible that you haven't even begun puberty yet, and that your major growth spurt hasn't even started.  If that's the case, you probably will grow 4-6 inches in the next year or two!  So try and relax and let the growth happen.

Keep in mind that a person's looks and body size is not a good measure of who they are as a person. There are many different ways to measure a person, by their heart; by their character and the way they treat others. You may not have any say about your height but you certainly can influence these other qualities.
