Problematic Eating Habits / Question
Published: January 16, 2002
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I am a thirteen-year old girl, five four with a small body frame. I weigh about 135 lbs. I know I'm a little overweight. I am very active and play several sports. I think the reason I'm a little heavy is that when I am bored, I eat. Can you help me with this?

Dear Bored Eater,
TeenHealthFX thinks it is great that you are concerned with your health. Eating for reasons, other than being hungry is quite common, but nevertheless, can lead to a variety of health problems.
You mention eating when you are bored. One recommendation TeenHealthFX has is to find an alternative to eating. Perhaps you could go for a walk or write a letter. Finding a task to fill your time, while occupying your mind will prevent you from eating when you really are not hungry. Other activities may include doing homework, calling a friend or watching television.
Another recommendation TeenHealthFX has is to change your snack foods. It is silly to think you absolutely will not snack, ever. So, just snack on better foods. Instead of chips, cakes and candy, try some carrot and celery sticks, an apple (or other kind of fruit) or even some trail mix. Snacks with lower calories will help limit weight gain - not to mention, being much healthier for you!
