Body Weight - What's Normal? / Question
Published: May 7, 2002

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I'm 5'10" and I am 124.5 lbs. Am I at an ok weight for my height?

Dear OK Weight For Height,

Using the Body Mass Index (BMI) located in Appropriate Height And Weight at 5'10", 124.5 lbs, you have a BMI score of 17.9. Healthful scores usually fall in the range of 19-25. Since your score is below 18, TeenHealthFX recommends that you see a doctor for a checkup and an assessment of your diet. You might be asked to see a nutritionist who will be able to advise you on proper eating habits and help you plan a diet that would be ideal for your individual needs.

You did not mention your age, but be aware that during puberty there are periods of sudden growth. These growth spurts can throw off your BMI score and do not necessarily present as a problem. For example you may sprout up in height but your weight has not caught up or visa-versa.

If you would like to meet with a doctor from the Adolescent/Young Adult Center For Health located in Morristown New Jersey, you can call 973.971.6475 for an appointment.
