Eating Healthy / Question
Published: May 8, 2002

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am a 14-year-old girl. I am very short and small for my age (4'11" 100lb). I eat very fast for some reason. I would like to know why. I finish my meals way before anyone in my family when sometimes I even eat more then them, and I'm not overweight.

Dear 14, Short & Small, Quick Eater,

How fast you eat does not influence your size. Some people just have faster metabolism and burn calories quickly. It would be hard for TeenHealthFX to say why you eat fast. However gulping down your food is not healthy and can lead to digestive problems. Try approaching mealtime with a more relaxed attitude that also focuses on the social aspect that occur when the family gathers around the table.

Even though you feel that you are small for your age according to your BMI score (see Appropriate Height and Weight you are at a healthy weight for your height. At 14 your body will continue to develop and your metabolism may change. Try not to be overly concerned about your weight. Eat healthy and exercise 3 to 4 times per week and your body will take care of itself.
