Body Weight - What's Normal? / Question
Published: June 20, 2002

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am 13 years old and weigh 70 lbs. I have a small chest and no period. I'm about 5'2" and have size 8 in shoe size. I'm not anorexic or bulimic and eat quite a bit. Am I normal for my age?

Signed: Normal For 13 y/o

Dear Normal For 13 y/o,

To determine a healthy weight health care providers recommend using the Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI has become the medical standard used to determine if a person may be at a health risk due to weight. TeenHealthFX provides a BMI Calculator, which you can use by clicking on Appropriate Height and Weight.

Your BMI score was 12.8, which is considered very low. This score strongly suggests that you should consult with a doctor and a nutritionist to discuss your nutrition and weight. There has to be a reason why you are not gaining weight and your doctor can help you find the answer.

If you would like to meet with a doctor from the Adolescent/Young Adult Center For Health in Morristown, New Jersey, you can call 973.889.6350 for an appointment.
