Underweight/Overweight: Affecting Your Mind And body / Question
Published: February 29, 2000

Dear TeenHealthFX,

My sister is 10 years old and she will be going into middle school next year.  She is 4ft 11inches and is about 120 pounds.  I'm afraid that the kids next year will make fun of her because she is overweight.  She gets upset when people make remarks about her weight.  She doesn't exercise and doesn't enjoy running.  What should she do about her weight?

Dear My Sister's Overweight,

TeenHealthFX is glad to hear that you are concerned about your sister and that you care about her feelings.  Weight issues among teen-aged females are important and need to be handled delicately.  At this time in her life, she is dealing with her changing body because of puberty and dieting is not the answer unless prescribed by a doctor.  She really needs to talk to her doctor about her concerns.  A doctor may have her see a nutritionist who can help her develop healthy eating habits and a good exercise regime.

Your sister is 10, 4'11" and 120 pounds, which is not really overweight given her age.  We are not sure of what stage of puberty she is in.  If she is fairly developed, this may be an appropriate weight.  If she is in early puberty, she will probably grow taller and her weight may even out by itself.  However, she does need to follow healthy eating habits and an exercise plan.  You should try talking to her, or your parents about the situation.  Encourage them to go to a doctor or a nutritionist.

While you are waiting for her appointment, reinforce that the goal is not weight loss, but weight management.  This means achieving the best weight possible in the context of overall health.  You want your sister to try to adopt healthful eating and exercise habits.

She can:

  1. Gradually change to a healthful eating styles using the food pyramid
  2. Do not think that any foods are totally restricted, everything in moderation!
  3. Gradually increase to at least 30 minutes of physical activity 3 - 5 times per week.

Again, TeenHealthFX admires that you care and are willing to help your sister!
