Healthy Ways Of Losing And Gaining Weight / Question
Published: May 30, 2000

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I'm a 14-year-old girl.  I weigh 109 pounds, maybe more.  I know that is normal.  But I want my stomach to be tighter.  When I wear a bathing suit, my stomach has rolls of skin sometimes.  Is there any way to tighten my stomach without dieting? Also, my friend is taller than me (she is about 5'6") and she weighs 98 pounds and her stomach is soooo skinny it is nasty!  Her arms and legs are thin too.  My friends keep bugging her to eat more, which I know upsets her.  How can we get it through to her that she should probably eat a little more without making her angry (which she is a lot)?

Dear Weight Questions,

You ask two terrific questions.  Let us start with the first - how to tighten your stomach (abdomen or "abs").  You say that your weight is normal - we hope that means you are eating healthy.  Check out two of our questions for information on Eating Healthy and Appropriate Height And Weight to find out if your eating habits are as healthy as they can be and what your body mass index is.  As for wanting your stomach to be tighter - exercise is the second part of the equation.

You do not mention what kind of exercise you do.  Although you cannot lose weight in a specific area, you can tone your overall appearance with exercise.  Talk with you gym teacher or coach on how to exercise safely.  There are also many videos available that go through a range of exercising and strength training in a safe manner.  Rent some before buying any to see which ones you like best.

The best way to have a healthy mind and body is to eat right and exercise on a regular basis.

Now, for your next question, TeenHealthFX appreciates your worry for your friend.  It can be distressing to have someone you care for get angry with you because you are concerned.  Please read the answer to the question Does My Friend Have An Eating Disorder? The answer will provide you with some information and guidance.
