Dear Stunted Growth & Lifting,

Yes, it is possible, in some cases that weight lifting can stunt your growth. Researchers have shown there is a link between weight lifting & stunted growth. Lifting heavy weights could speed up the closing of growth plates before they had a chance to fully develop. By stopping the growth process prematurely, you stunt your growth.

It is a good idea to check with your doctor before starting any type of weight training or exercise program.  A physician can evaluate you medically and determine what type of exercise program is good for you.

The doctor will probably suggest that when you start weight training you use relatively lightweights and do 2 or 3 sets of 15 reps. Emphasis should be on proper form and lifting for muscle endurance. Your weightlifting should also be supervised for safety reasons. Learning proper lifting techniques will reduce the likelihood of injury.
