Growth & Development / Question
Published: May 9, 2001

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am a 15-year-old boy with a bone age of 16, this mainly due to the fact that I've been on steroids for the past year. I've gone from being a 5'7 13 year old to a 5'8 fifteen year old and being a rugby player. I'm concerned about my height, will I get any bigger and if not, what can I do?

Dear 15 Year Old Boy - Bone Age 16,

When TeenHealthFX initially hears about a young male using steroids, we wonder why? Has a doctor placed you on steroids for the treatment of a medical condition such as asthma? If so, you should let your doctor know about your concerns and see what he or she has to say.

Most 15 years-olds have not completed the growth cycle and it is quite possible for them to add a few inches to their height before they are done. As far as having a bone age of 16, TeenHealthFX is not quite sure where you got this information from and what exactly it means.

Now here comes the lecture. For those of you who are not using anabolic steroids under your doctor's care, STOP IMMEDIATELY! Long-term use can lead to liver and kidney damage, high blood pressure, damage to the immune system and impaired growth in young people. Other side effects that can be detected early on are acne; increase hair growth and emotional instability (i.e., increased aggression, violence, mood swings).

If you have been using steroids on your own you need to see a doctor as soon as possible. Be honest with your physician so that they will be able to help to the best of their ability. Some of the damage caused by steroids is reversible if you stop in time.

If you need a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center For Health at 973.889.6350 for an appointment.
