Stunted Growth Concerns / Question

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am a 13-year-old male and play basketball. I want to get taller (I am 5'8"), jump higher, and be stronger. I have been lifting weights at a gym and doing exercises that will supposedly make me jump higher. I do calf raises (standing on a step with just my toes and lifting upward), but my friend says that calf-raises and most weight lifting for your legs will stunt your growth. Is he right about my growth being stunted from these leg exercises?

Dear Stunted Growth,

 

Nearly all stunted growth is a result of a hormonal imbalance, such as growth hormone inadequacy. Genetic factors determine size.

 

It is nice that your friend is concerned about you, but tell him not to worry. Weight lifting, if done correctly will not harm you. You need to set realistic expectations and do not try to push too hard. Most injuries from weight lifting come from improper technique or from using to much weight. Talk to your basketball coach, he/she will be aware of what type of exercises work well for basketball players. Be patient, with hard work results will come.

 

You need to be aware that no matter how hard you work in the gym, ultimately it will have no effect on your height. As in most sports, it is not the size of the man or woman, it the size of his or her heart for the sport. If you do not believe us, just ask Muggsy Bogues or Spud Webb.
