Dear Major Drinking Problem and Can't Stop,

Admitting that you have a “major problem” is the first step on the road to recovery. If you have been unable to quit drinking on your own then you are going to need professional help. The first step would be to talk to your parents and let them know the extent of the problem. Since the issue has already come up it will not catch them by surprise. Next schedule an appointment with a mental health professional that specializes in the treatment of addictions for an evaluation. It is important that you be completely honest during the assessment so that you can get the level of treatment that you need. Once the evaluation is complete then you will be given a set of recommendations by the specialist that you and your family will need to follow. Depending on the severity it could be outpatient, day treatment, or require inpatient treatment.

It is very important that you seek help. Alcohol and drug dependence is a progressive illness and left untreated it only gets worse.

If you live in northern New Jersey and need help finding a therapist you can call the Access Center from Atlantic Behavioral Health at 888-247-1400. Outside of this area you can log onto the US Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration website for referrals in your area.

For more information on the topic as well as a great resource check out the Alcohol Anonymous website.
