Other Birth Control Method Questions And Concerns / Question
Published: August 7, 2001
Dear TeenHealthFX,
Can I get pregnant if we have sex but the guy pulls out a while before he thinks he is going to cum and I just continue it with oral until he cums into my mouth? Is there a chance that I can get pregnant? How long after is there signs that I am pregnant without doing a pregnancy test?

Dear Pulling Out,
TeenHealthFX does not recommend that you use the "pulling out" method. It is very risky and does not protect against pregnancy or STD's. Many males have what is called pre-ejaculatory fluids ("pre-cum"). This does contain sperm, which can lead to pregnancy. Along these lines, many males do not even feel the pre-ejaculatory fluids come out. This makes this an even riskier situation because your partner may not feel anything come out.
There is really only one way to be sure that you do not get pregnant and that is through not having sex (abstinence). However, it sounds like you are already engaging in sexual activity so it is important that you try and practice safer sex activities by using condoms each and every time you have sexual intercourse or oral sex.
Most STD's can be transmitted through any ejaculatory fluids, including pre-ejaculatory fluids reaching any area of the genital area. You can also be at risk for transmitting herpes, AIDS, hepatitis B, gonorrhea, syphilis and warts through oral sex. When engaging in any type of sexual activity, oral, anal or vaginal sex, make sure you use a condom to help prevent the spread of STD's.
Vaginal sex is the only method by which you run a risk of getting pregnant. By having oral sex you are not at risk for pregnancy (but you should still protect yourself against STDs by having your partner wear a condom). Another way of cutting your risk of getting pregnant is using birth control like birth control pills or Depo-Provera. When used properly along with a condom it significantly cuts your chances of pregnancy.
How do you know if you are pregnant? Some early pregnancy symptoms will appear about 2 weeks after conception.
- Missed periods
- Frequent urination
- Light headaches
- Change in appetite
- Nausea
- Fatigue
- Breast tenderness
All of the above symptoms can be caused by other factors too. The best way to find out if you are pregnant is to see a doctor or go to a teen health clinic. A teen health clinic can see you without your parent's permission, confidentially and on a low/no cost basis. They often provide free condoms, and can help to educate you in making the best possible decisions regarding sex, birth control and STD protection. If you live in Northern New Jersey you can contact the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 889.6350.
