Lower Hanging Right Testicle

Published: February 14, 2011
Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am a 15 YO boy and I know that sometimes your left testicle is supposed to hang lower than your right, but my right one hangs lower. Is something wrong? Please help me out.

Dear Lower Hanging Right Testicle,

Although some males have testicles that hang equally, most have one side lower than the other.  The reasoning is not completely understood, but is thought to be related to the fact that each testicle has its own blood supply.  It is also believed that having one testicle lower than the other causes less squeezing of the testes against each other and allows for better cooling than if they were side by side.

Many males have a testicle that hangs lower on the left, but a lower right testicle is not uncommon and can be completely normal as well.  It is also common that the testicle that hangs lower tends to be smaller in size.

That being said, it is still important that you get a yearly physical exam at the doctor’s office, which includes a genital exam, to make sure that there are no issues. Males ages 13 and up should also do testicular self-exams at home about once a month.  If you do not know the correct way of doing this, please see ask your regular doctor and he or she would be happy to show you how.  Be aware of your body and always be on the lookout for any changes. Please also refer to the following article, “One Testicle's Bigger.”  You should be checking for any pain on touching the area, lumps, and/or changes in size, appearance or texture.  Any of these could be signs of testicular disease. If you do notice any such signs, contact your doctor right away.  Just remember, your doctor has probably seen and heard it all already, so do not let embarrassment keep you from getting medical help!

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health in Morristown 973-971-6475 or the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health in Summit at 908-522-5757 for an appointment. Outside this area contact a local Adolescent Medicine Specialist, your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood.
